Goodbye and Thanks for all The Fish

You may or may not have noticed that I have been missing in action for months. No new products, no real updates on anything, no blog posts and not even any action on my FB page.

Why Paul, why?

Because I got to the point where I just didn’t care, I was phoning it in and even then I was doing it poorly.

If I am only doing IM for the money, well I may as well get a job, steady hours, steady income and no more or less worries than comes with working for yourself.

So that is what I have done, I stopped it all.. I have let pretty much all my sites go. I havent renewed domains, I have shrunk down to one $10 a month hosting account.

I realized that the only way to make money in product creation was to schmooze. To go to events, spend time in the bar, suck up to people and hope that when my next tool gets released they will remember my name enough to actually think about maybe promoting.

To build the big ass list and not care if they get pushed something new every week or month, to produce upsells (which should really be in the product to make it complete) so I can eek out some money from the product (because people wont promote unless I gave 100% on the FE). There is so much more I could say ..but it all just seems pointless and at the point when you feel it is pointless you stop doing it.

So what does this mean, well it means I am not spending any time trying to learn how to sell T-Shirts (until FB change the rules and kill that off), I am not calling local business people to try and sell them on how important a website/fb page/cure receptionist is (because if they don’t know by now they have bigger issues than I can deal with), I am not trying to work out what the heck Google actually want in a info page.

I am not spending a couple of hours a day scouring forums and FB groups for what is hot, what the next shiny object will be, what is the next idea that I could turn into software.

If you are making good money online, then I am genuinely pleased for you. If you are chasing shiny objects and beating yourself up because your one and only site tanked, and BSing on forums and Facebook about how well you are doing..Just stop

On the last 2 years of taxes, did your online business mean you had to pay tax or did it please you to know it made a loss so you would get some back?

If you have made a loss for 2 years.. STOP.. Take a break, spend some time with the family, go walking, do all the jobs that you promised your wife you would do.

Because if you are “working” online for money, and you havent made any money in 2 years.. Well you have been working for free for 2 years.. If you are willing to work 10 hours a week for FREE for the next 2 years what could you achieve? Is there a homeless shelter nearby that could use your 10 hours a week to help people in a far worse place than you are?

Could you spend the 10 hours in a charity shop?, Maybe reading to people in homes who have no visitors, could you become a volunteer fire fighter, what about learning that martial art you always dreamed of..

I can’t believe that your dream is to read blog posts, WSO offers and sales pages telling you how you have to jump on this new thing before the loophole gets close.

If you hate your job , and so you do IM because you hope one day to earn enough to quit, well you should quit. QUIT IM! Spend 30 mins writing down your dream job, then what it would take to get there.

In the 10 hours a week you spend on IM, you could learn a language , you could learn to fly a plane, you could learn to be a fitness instructor, you could learn to be the best BBQ Chef in the land.

What am I doing…

I have a day job now, and I love it.. I know that sounds crazy but I do. I get to deal with programmers (ok they may not always be so happy to speak to me), I am visibly moving the company forward, I get to speak to real life people daily. Some are funny, some are not, some questions are dumb, some are genius. But they are respectful and not one of them are calling me names over a $17 sale of which I earned $0.

But what about online.. well my wife does eBay and some Amazon FBA. I actually like the FBA model because we go shopping together, we come home box it when we want and then ship it off.  Am we earning as much as when I was in my heyday.. Nope , am I as stressed.. Nope and FBA is growing leaps and bounds for her.

Would I go back into IM?
Yes, but not doing products at $17..

I would come back into IM with software as a service, and I would not aim it at IM’ers who want to spend as little as possible. I would get in with ecommerce (which I really enjoy), I would get back in with building a real business rather than just making money.

Are you building a business, or are you making money and hope you make enough to finance the next thing before Google/Facebook/Whoever pull the rug out on that idea. If you are just making money, then my advice is to seriously look at whether this is making you happy, if you are forgoing happiness for cash then I hope you are putting that cash to good use.

So it is goodbye from me and thanks for all the fish, I am emailing buyers of my various programs with the latest versions of stuff and I will carry on helping where I can. I really have made some great relationships in the IM world, I just do not have the interest to keep pushing, I love being involved with programmers and a company that has the money to back up real products.

Ok I could go on and on but I won’t, I truly salute the people who have made massive money online year in and year out but I am much happier moving onto things I actually care about rather than trying to rank a site for adult female acne just so i can get some adsense clicks.

The More Things Change The more They Stay The Same

As I sit here writing this it is 99 degrees outside and we have spent a few hours buying school clothes. That means we have a week to go until school starts!

So in about 8 days I will be back to work, the summer is 8+ weeks of holding pattern for me, work when you can and make what you can in between swimming, chasing lizards and getting more clothes dirty than I would have thought my daughter owned.

I know not everyone stops work for the summer, some people have big teams to keep employed and some people don’t have kids so they can work right through. For me it has been a very up and down time. I found a renewed passion for selling, on eBay of all places, the buzz of a $1.50 needlework pattern selling for $36 and $3 shirts going for $50 was a good one. It has been nice to do something different and learn that the skills you build in traditional IM have a use on eBay.

I have been watching some people launch product that are half baked and poorly envisioned but make a fortune on them as they have a flash sales page and are well connected. That makes me sad but some other things happened to reassure me that the good guys do ok as well..

Over the summer I have seen people change direction 180 degrees and that is a good thing. If the stuff you are doing isn’t making money then change, write a book, find a product to sell, offer services. No one has the right answer for everyone, you are working for your own benefit so do what works for you.

So what have I seen/heard/learned this last week or so (i really havent been paying attention before that)..

Hostgator Fail
In the last week both Hostgator and a couple of other big hosts have had huge downtime. This cost a lot of people a lot of money, some product launches got held up, I am sure a lot of amazon/affiliate sales were lost and of course Adsense clicks can’t be made if they can’t see your site.

This made 2 things happen on Facebook..

1-Everyone moaned, a lot, and slagged off the new owners of Hostgator (which doesnt explain why the other company was down)
2-Everyone moved to a “better” host and then shared their affiliate link. They had been with the new company for all of 10 minutes so there was no way to really know if they are any better but hey when did that stop anyone slapping up an aff link?

Black Hat Still Works
I have not got a clue why this is news to anyone, Attempting to manipulate the Google results is a full time job for more than one very smart cookie. The latest news (and it seemed obvious to me so not sure why it is big news) is that by changing the dates on your WordPress posts you can fool Google into thinking it is new and ranking it higher (ok maybe a bit more to it but that is the basic gist).

Seemed pretty obvious that this was at least worth a try as soon as they started talking freshness. I believe there is at least one plugin that does it for you. One thing people forget is that BH is not easy, it is no easier than “White hat” SEO . You have to know your arse from your elbow, you have to be able to do some elementary technical things and you have to be able to think.

That is why so many people do it really badly, they don’t think and they don’t take the time to learn the technical skills needed to achieve the desired result.

There is Gold In Them Thar Hills…Still
This is one thing that hasn’t changed over the summer, there is money being made and there are products being released telling you how to do it. The other thing that hasn’t changed is that people are buying the products then doing nothing with them.

Services are resurfacing, and higher priced ones, this is a great way to make some money. Offer a service that you can do standing on your head but others can’t.

Niche, Niche, Quiche
This was reconfirmed rather than learned, anyone can built a wordpress site for you for $150 or less. There are plenty of people who can write “quality” content for your site. Even getting videos made isn’t expensive, but if you pick a niche that is a dud then nothing will help you.

That is all for today, I have one more week before I am back at this full time, ok well more full time than I have been for the last 2+ months. I want to hear what you have been up to , what has bummed you out or excited you. Come on share the news!
