I recently moved a site for someone from their hosting to my own and noticed that the uploads folder was over 50 meg!

It only had 30 or so photos in it but all of them had been uploaded at the same size as they came off their camera. It works as she only has one site and I am not worried about the space she uses, but what if you have 10 or 20 sites all like that.

Pretty soon your hosting is full of huge images that don’t need to be that way. It is a waste of hosting space, a waste of processing power and generally not a good use of resources. Resizing images is easy to do and you can use an online website for free.

Resizing your images may seem like a small thing but it really is something that can help. Renaming your images to something more search engine friendly is one of the best benefits.

Three Videos In ONE day! I must have spent to long in the sun yesterday.

I have done a video already showing you how to upload wordpress plugins, how to set up semiologic reloaded and one on the general settings in WordPress This last video for today is more on what plugins I use and why, I do also talk about keeping a clean wordpress install being important.

I show you how I set the theme up for a basic site, there is much more you can do with it of course but this video covers the setting up of a basic site and should be enough to get you started.

If I am doing a all out adsense site then I will either use semio and strip the header out (i do show that in the video) or else I use one of these adsense themes

Setting Up WordPress

I started off my day by making a video showing how to install and set up Semio Reloaded theme for wordpress.

Then my wife asked me a question on her way out the door..

She mentioned something about cart before the horse, so I have done a video showing what settings to change in WordPress 2.92.

It is possible that the look of WordPress will change in 3.0 (I haven’t looked at it yet) but the basic layout is the same.

My wife reminded me that just because I know something it doesnt mean everyone does. She also reminded me that I seem to have forgotten how to unload the dishwasher but you probably don’t need a video on that.

While I am working on new plugins and am working on ideas to revamp old ones it can be easy to make videos going in depth into things without ever covering the basics.

So here is a 2 minute video showing how to upload a plugin using WordPress own built in zip uploader.

I do mention in the video that if you get a “invalid header” error when uploading a plugin or theme, it means there is something else inside the zip.

So instead of zipping up the folder which contains the plugin they have put that folder into another folder and then added a manual. This is the way it was usually done before WordPress made this update. It allowed us to keep everything nice and neat so you could find the plugin and the manual all in one place.

If you get that error, dont panic, just unzip the plugin/theme  and either use filezilla (or your favorite ftp program) or just create a new zip that only has the plugin/theme folder rather than all the other bits and pieces.
