Guest Posting for Links is Hard Work
Anyone who tells you that guest posting for links is easy, is one of 2 things
-Trying to sell you something
-A person who has never done it on any scale
I am not talking about writing a article spinning it a few hundred times and then throwing some version of it out to every place you can find (come on we all did that at some stage). I am talking about contacting a site in your niche and getting them to approve a title then writing truly unique content for it, that meets their guidelines and then waiting for them to post it.
It can get expensive if you pay for an article to be written, $10 per article seems to be base price in a lot of places for an native English speaker, using the cheapest provider who speaks English as a 2nd language is not a great idea these days. Sites that accept guest posts want good quality content and they have so many people applying to them that they can pick and choose.
I am going to share some ideas and tips here, yes I am going to include some links and yes one or two of them may even make me some money.
Stretching Your Content Budget
One of the problems I have is doing the research and getting the initial idea. I can write well enough once I get started but getting that start is the tough thing. So what I do is pay for an article, then I import it to my Article Helper program – I have reduced this to $17 right now , the page says $37 I know but it will charge at $17 -and use the original as inspiration to write two more versions. I do not spin it, I will just use the three totally original articles.
While you may ask the blog owner if they approve a specific headline you can easily use a article that is already written.
- Remember not to keyword stuff the content (I recently rejected a guest post on a wedding site that had a kwd density of 4% which is just crazy these days)
- Make the title relevant, short and interesting, not full of stop words (and, is, etc)
- Ask yourself if you would accept the post
- Use sub headings and even bullet points to break up the content
- Attache a relevant photo when you send the content, it saves the blog owner having to look for one.
If you produce good content (with real information and good use of related words) and do not do the bare minimum required, the blogs will be happy to accept them.
Finding Blogs To Guest Post On
This is where it can get interesting, there are a few sites around that list blogs which are looking for content, I will list the few I know of here
-http://guestr.com/
Then of course you can just do searches for your keyword on Google and Bing and see which of them are blogs and then see if any of them will accept guest posts. There are more detailed Google search queries you can do, I have listed a couple of variations below:-
- “Guest post” + “keyword”
- “Guest contributor” + “keyword”
- “Guest posting guidelines” + “keyword”
- “Guest authoring guidelines” + “keyword”
- “Guest blog guidelines” + “keyword”
- “Submit a guest post” + “keyword”
Do not just try your main keyword, try some related words and variations. Do not just search on Google and call it good, Bing is another option and there are blog directories which may be worth looking at. The best known one is http://technorati.com/blogs/directory/
Like any type of link building the more effort you put in the better results you will get.
I do also use the postrunner network (part of the keyword academy) it is free for 30 days so it really is worth looking at and they are always improving their system. But you do not have to pay to find good sites to offer guest posts up to.
How Do I Know A Blog Is Worth Contacting?
This is a good question, Guest Posting for links is time consuming. You have to find the sites, contact them , then get the content written then wait for it to be approved and published then of course you want to help promote the page. If the site is junky then it is a waste of your time, so how can you tell a good site from a bad one?
Well obviously being in your niche is important, but beyond that what do you look at?
- Page Rank – This is not a great indicator but it is the easiest one so most people will use it
- Domain Authority – If the domain has good authority then it will pass some of that along to your page
- Social interaction – Do they have followers on Facebook, Twitter, Pintererst?
- What % of their content is guest posts – If the site only uses guest posts as their only content then each page has at least one link out. If your content is one of only a few guest posts that can be better
- Commitment – If the site owner gives you the feeling they are committed to the site it is a good sign and they are more likely to push your post.

What Do I Say When Contacting A Blog?
Be personal , be real and even if it is a form letter try to add something unique. If a blog post on the site is going to give you good link power than take the time to look at the twitter stream or the Facebook stream and mention something from there in the email. People love to know people are reading their sites and the social media accounts.
Some studies have said that a womens name helps get more responses. One thing I do know is that I reject requests that are full of misspellings and terrible grammar. I am not particularly bothered by that stuff normally but if I can not even work out what you are asking for in your email then there is no way I am going to accept a guest post from you.
You could be totally different and contact them via skype or even a phone call! Going the extra yard really could make a difference as to whether you get your post accepted or not.
How Do I Keep Track?
This is something that came up in conversation on Tuesday with another local SEO guy. If you are doing guest posts for a few sites and working with a few writers it can become a nightmare to track it all. I would say start a spread sheet early in the process. Make one for each site you are promoting and keep records of the urls you have contacted, the ones who have said yes they will accept a post and once they post it put the url up.
Sounds Like A Lot Of Work
“Too much work, don’t think I will bother”
Cool, one less person looking for high quality blogs to guest post to is good news for me. It is work, it is not super fast and you will not get a thousand links at the press of a button. But that is kind of the point, Google is all over the mass generated links and is devaluing them left right and center. Effective SEO is going to take more work not less work as we move forward.
Once They Post My Guest Post Then What Do I Do?
Well then you say thank you very much to the blog owner and you promote the page. Just do some light social for it. If you keep in touch with the blog owner you may find that you build a good relationship and then you may be able to do more guest posts, or maybe an interview together. Help to share their Facebook posts, comment on their blogs and generally be nice.
Paying it forward works online as well as anywhere else.
Is Guest Posting All I Need To Do?
No, guest posts alone are not enough to rocket you to the top, but they should be part of the equation and that is exactly what everyone has to realize. SEO is a puzzle, it takes many parts to make a complete picture. No one thing is the whole picture, you need to learn what parts to use and where to slot them in.

It certainly is hard work….I’ve sent a couple out to those semi automated guest posts where you login to the wordpress site and submit your post waiting for review. A few weeks later and the articles are still waiting for review. Another site I sent the article manually and still haven’t heard back from the guy. It seems to me you have to be a bit more selective about who you guest post for. Maybe send an email first to see if they are responsive. Or comment on their blog and develop a bit of a relationship before even broaching the subject of guest posting….certainly not a backlinks on autopilot way to go. I think guest posting is about getting real traffic and contacts in your industry rather than backlinks.

Thanks for your comment Ade
The idea of doing blog comments first is a good one. If a site doesn’t even check its blog comments then it is probably not going to take the time to review your guest posts.
I have always felt that blog commenting was a good way to build relationships, then you can leverage those into more solid links, or even work with the site owner on future projects.
I know I am a bit biased about Blog comments as I have software that I sell – http://commenthut.com – but along with guest posting they are viable link building tools. Good links are not always easy to get ones!

I attended an interesting webinar by Derek Halpern of http://socialtriggers.com/. He had a great strategy of finding the blogs you want to guest on (high pr, in your niche/market and comment and share regularly, and then send an email of how one of their tips or blogs helped you to do something and just thank them. Like you both said, building relationships! I have a multi author blog and some of the submissions I get are horrible and clearly not intended for my market!

Thanks for popping along, I went and looked at your blog for painters and I have to say I really liked it. Well laid out and some good info there. Well done!
I have a plugin called Category ads, which allows you to show different ads in the sidebar for each category. Since you have a few diff areas it may be something to consider.

Hi Paul,
I have many blogs, as most IM’ers do…and I get approached constantly to post articles. I haven’t bothered contacting blog owners myself because I have been turned off by the garbage usually offered to me. Occasionally I am given fantastic articles by SEO companies providing content for their clients.
I was cheeky with a couple and said I would post for a fee, as I researched them and they were expensive! I thought if they charge their clients like that, they can give me a few dollars to post their article. One paid, one didn’t.
Maybe I should think more about approaching blog owners.
Susan O’Dea recently posted..Article Content For Your Website
Hi Susan
Posting for a fee makes sense in the instance you mention. One other thing I have seen is people charging $10 to remove an article or link. Who knows you could get paid twice for each article, once to list it and once to remove it.
Paul
p.s I just looked at the article you link to, it is good. Wondering if people would be drawn down below the fold if you had the pic higher up the page, maybe smaller? It was just a thought, others may disagree (I cant even get my 4 year old to agree with me tonight)..
I’m glad you liked my article…and I always appreciate your opinion. I think I will move my image up. I don’t know why I put it there really…but time to move it!
I also look forward to being paid to remove articles!
Thanks Paul.

This is a great article as if you know what is on my mind. I have not yet guest blogged but I am seriously considering it. I have received a lot of request and have posted great articles to my blogs which helped those blogs to have quality contents.
There is however the other side of the coin. Recently, I got such requests and posted the article but…
1. Something struck me that I have read similar article somewhere so I used Copyscape and I found that the article has been badly spun and the copy sent to me had over 60% duplicate.
2. Although English is not my mother tongue I write my own articles for this particular blog and I refrain from using spun articles although I do spin for link building purposes.
I think guest blogging is good for SEO and for interaction with established blogs under the circumstances that you really post unique and quality posts which may benefit both you and the blog owner.
Misuse has ever been the general practice since the internet. Therefore my advice is to keep things under control and watch out.

I did forget to mention that you should check each article in copyscape before posting, good tip.
Considering English is not your native language you write pretty darn well I think. I agree that people will always misuse anything, they forget the rule “With great power comes great responsibility”.
Thanks for your comment and do come back again

Paul:
Hey glad you put out another email. Don’t know if you are going to like what I have to say, but I believe the churn it and burn it mentality has to become a thing of the past. I believe that it it time to stick to one niche at a time and become an authority in that niche. And forget about what Google wants. think about what your tribe wants.
Google controls about 6% of all Internet traffic. Where does the rest come from? Little trickles and tributaries from all over. Guest blogging and forum comments should be an active part of you becoming a master in your niche. Do these things because you have something of value for your tribe and not to gain back links in Google. Forget about Google’s response. You want qualified traffic coming in from blogs and forums in your niche.
Yes, this is going to be a lot harder and a lot more work. But the days of push button solutions are over. You have to prove to your tribe that you have someting of value to offer them and you have to go looking for your tribe. Ween yourself off of Google dependence. Build a traffic plan incorporating all the ways you can get traffic without Google. Make Google a small part of your total traffic plan. I am truly getting tired of trying to please Google and of all the IMers who are looking for a push button solution to unqualified traffic because it is easier. This is a business. Do the work and they will come!! And in the mean time, your Google traffic may start to pick up also.
Hi Dave
Not sure why I would not like what you have to say. I am pretty sure that I have said we need to change the way we do things. Of course it is easier said than done, breaking old habits is never easy.
People are automating the tribe as much as they are automating anything else. It is harder but there are some seriously smart cookies out there and they are doing it.
Authority blogging and paid traffic seem to be the two things that many people are recommending but both of them are easy to talk about and hard to do.
I would say that all of us are tired of the fluffy animal updates from Google, even if they did manage to wipe out some sites that deserved it. They took plenty that did not.
People should diversify everything they do, the monetization on sites, the link building, even the ways they earn money.
Paul
Guest Posting is a great and genuine method for building backlinks. Certainly it entails lots of hard work since we are not dealing with machines but real people who are great bloggers possibly. Hence, our content must be great and original. You’re not gonna cheat other bloggers to post your articles just for building links right? So this method is difficult but worth doing.

I’ve had some experience with guest posts for a couple client sites and so far I must have found the writer who could easily be dubbed as the “golden horseshoe”!
Excellent content, structure, and all she asked for was one little backlink in exchange for 700 plus words. She also did two other 500 plus words for the same trade. It’s been a couple months and have yet to hear from her in a while, but this individual is probably the only one person out of hundreds that has contacted me for the same trade. Like you stated, if you can barely discern an email, what possible value could be found in an article?
Nice post Paul

I have a wedding blog and just today I had someone submit a site all about concrete foundation repair. Why would I possibly put that kind of article up. It is a waste of his time and mine.
I like the idea of guest posts, just make them decent and don’t do too many.

Excellent article.
Writing quality posts is a must. Hey, that’s how I got here.
I followed a link from Michelle McPherson who I follow on Facebook. She recommended this blog post.
You’ve got some great ideas for finding worthy blogs to approach, but most people know who are the big players in their niche. If I’m going to take the time to write a good quality article for someone else’s blog, I might as well try to land it on a big dog’s site.
Great article!

Glad you liked the post. I agree that if you know the big boys in the niche then go for them first.
One thing you can do to increase the chance of the big boys approving your blog post is to build a relationship with them first.
-Sensible comments on their blog
-Interact on Facebook, twitter and Google+ (G+ is better in many ways as less people are interacting with them so your voice may be heard)
If you can’t get one of the big dog’s then see if you can get someone with social influence would be my next thought.
Paul
Paul,
Don’t forget to search for “write for us Keyword”
Also i would request that anyone who does submit an article spend an extra 2 or 3 minutes once it posted linking it to social media sites. It helps everyone involved
I now get about 7-10 requests a day from people who wan to guest post 90% are on topic but some are so far off it’s not funny… i.e the person who wanted to post a laser eye surgery article onto a fitness blog , then insisted they could make a few changes so it would be on topic!

Hi Paul, nice to hear from you again. Great post!
I enjoy accepting guest posts. It helps vary the content and is even better when the writer promotes the post. I always have a proviso that I’m allowed to make small changes within the article (to correct any grammar etc) and to reject if if it’s not up to standard. Also it’s a good idea to put the article through copyscape before publishing.

While the guest blogging route requires a significant time investment in research, outreach and content creation, I’ve found the links to be of a far superior quality – not only are we acquiring links for next to at a lower rate than paid placements because guest posts are often free, we also get backlinks which are relevant, permanent and trustworthy – this means they’ll stand the test of time as well.

You said that guest blogging alone won’t be enough to rocket your site or your page to the top of the search results. In many cases this is probably true. I did have a case where I got a brand new webpage on a brand new website to number one in Google by publishing only 15 articles. That post outranks competing posts from many blogs that have lots of domain authority. So, these kinds of links can be far more powerful than people give them credit for.
