Lee Reedy Interview
This week I interview Lee Reedy who is a fellow member of wp goldmine. Lee’s story is an interesting one as he had gone down the familiar route of Amazon, Adsense and Clickbank sites for many years. Then Panda/Penguin started to mess with his income.
Rather than fight Google he went back to one of his early passions, writing. This is not the usual story of an author actually, Lee talks about it being a business andĀ treatingĀ it as such. Learning how to make money with Amazon Kindle , not just how to write books, is important and we cover just about everything in this podcast

I really enjoyed this weeks podcast as writing for Kindle is something I am interested in and Lee opened my eyes about some things. Not least that it really is work!
Lee suggested we can always do a follow up call so you can post any questions in the comments and we will cover them in another call or maybe Lee will pop in and answer them.

Great podcast Paul. Very informative and interesting to get inside the head of an author. It’s crazy how Amazon has now pretty much become Google’s biggest competitor. Thanks for sharing Lee.

No problem, I had a great time doing the podcast.
I think Google really screwed up with these last few updates. It seems that the top results are either wikipedia or amazon for a good number of my searches these days. How long until searchers figure this out and cut out the middle man?
Amazon is the 3rd largest search engine. Better than that, the searchers are BUYERS.

The funny thing is Lee since recording that podcast I have been working on something you mentioned.
I don’t think you realized you laid out a whole business in that podcast..
It was a great call, thanks for joining me on it.
Paul
Ah man, looks like I’m missing out on — hmm, what’s the going rate on a Kindle course these days? $247? lol…

You’re right Lee. Google is a bit vulnerable as the middle man/broker and they know it. Their recent acquisition of Frommer was interesting from that perspective and their desire to create more of their own content/services. They want to own search – literally

One question for you Lee – how would you say you divide your time of writing/production vs. marketing your books? It sounds really hard to do much marketing when you’re writing 4,000+ words in a day. Thanks.

90% of my time is spent on product. Amazon is a marketing machine. And one of the things about them is that they really are your partner in this venture. It’s to their benefit for you to succeed. You can use the tools they have available to kick start your sales. There is a lot of power in free if you provide a well written book, whether you use the Select program and take advantage of 5 free days per book, alternating your books, or work Amazon’s price matching algo to your benefit.
I personally feel that, unless you have a nice back list of books, Select works best for non-fiction. It is easier to rank in most non-fiction sub-categories than in fiction.
